Our journey towards a smaller environmental footprint took a step in the right direction this week with the final commissioning of our 80kW bank of solar panels. Whilst we won't be selling any electricity back to the grid anytime soon, these should reduce our electricity requirements by around 10%.

These join Zoe, our electric car purchased in 2021 during the fuel crisis.

The Future of Inspection?

Following discussions at the Mach Show in Birmingham in April 2022, Abbey has purchased a Keyence Image Measuring System. We really like our gadgets here in the business and its definitely an impressive piece of inspection kit. it joins the 6 x CMMs and range of other equipment available to inspectors and engineers.

New DMG Mori NLX2500/700 is delivered

We have just taken delivery of our third DMG Mori machining centre, this time a NLX 2500/700 with a centre rather than twin spindle, to further increase our turning capabilities here in the business. With some careful Jenga style machine moves, we managed to fit it in without removing any existing plant.

Such is the demand for turning capacity at the moment, the machine was cutting its first job 10 minutes after being commissioned.

New MAZAK VCP400L arrives at Abbey

We have taken delivery of a very, very narrow machining centre, to utilize space in the factory in the best possible way. Our floor space here is always in demand. The photo shows a mid-delivery “action” shot.

This machine is just 1.3m wide, and sports a 20000rpm spindle, as well as twin pallets. Our plan is to squeeze another two of these to the left of this machine, replacing the older machining centre that was in the spot with three new spindles.

Fourth Matsuura MX330 pallet loading 5-axis mill adds to Abbey's capabilities

Abbey now has its fourth Matsuura MX330. These pallet loading 5-axis mills have greatly improved our ability to quickly produce volumes of components for our customers.

Our four Matsuura machines compliment the 5 other 5-axis mills we have in the business.

Abbey Helps to Span the Digital Divide

The news has been filled recently with concerns about the “Digital Divide” in our society, particularly in light on the remote learning taking place in schools across the country. Abbey were pleased to be able to make a financial donation to Chantry Primary Academy in Luton to allow them to purchase a range of chromebooks and tablets.

45% of the pupils at the school come from disadvantaged backgrounds and we were very pleased to be able to help their children.

Increasing CNC Turning Capacity

We had a second new machine delivered in November 2020 – a DMG Mori NLX 2000-500 High Precision Turning Centre which will compliment the existing DMG Mori NLX2500-700 we already have. Recently, our turners have felt a little left out as they have seen lots of new milling equipment arrive in the factory. We thought it was about time they received a new piece of plant to use. As we already have a very similar Mori machine, it shouldn’t be long before this is being used to produce parts.

This now brings our total capacity to 24 CNC mills and 8 CNC lathes, and all of our more “vintage” CNC plant has been replaced. We have certainly kept our local second hand CNC dealer busy with the plant we have been moving on.

New Matsuura MX-330

Matsuura MX-330 delivered and commissed in record time

In late November Abbey took delivery of a third Matsuura MX-330 PC10 5 axis machining centre, which has joined the two we already have here. Like the others, the machine comes with 10 pallets and a 90 capacity tool changer for reliable unmanned 5 axis production.

Our thanks to the guys at Matsuura for getting the machine delivered and commissioned in record time.

Its already making parts!

Abbey adds 18,000rpm fast spindle mill to its 5-axis machining capabilities

In December 2019, Abbey Precision invested in another 5-Axis Mill, namely a Mazak Variaxis VXI500.

This has the fastest spindle speed of any of our machines, running at 18,000rpm and brings the number of 5-axis machining centres in the factory to 8,

New Manufacturing Plant and Equipment

We have been very active purchasing new equipment during the latter half of 2018.

We have purchased two new Matsuura MX-330, 5 axis, 10 pallet loading machines. One has already been delivered and installed in the new extension, and is currently being commissioned, and a number of engineers involved in training. The second machine is due mid-February.

Two new HAAS VF2SS Vertical machining centres were delivered towards the end of November, installed in the new extension, and both are now manufacturing parts. We have also invested in a CNC Jones and Shipman universal grinding machine, to give us back some degree of control for parts requiring grinding.

Inspection Equipment

To improve our ability to inspect parts in a fast moving busy inspection department, we have invested in two new LK Altera CNC CMMs.

These have new technology for us, in the form of contact profile scanning, along with Nikon laser scanning capability.

In addition to taking on new inspection staff, we hope these will also speed up our ability to move parts even more quickly through inspection, and complement the four CMM’s we already have at our disposal, as well as providing superb reports for our customers.

Design and Technology Student Visit

During two days in November, we welcomed students from local schools to help them get a better understanding of engineering and manufacturing in the ‘real world’.

During the visit they had a general introduction from Steve, our Managing Director, and then toured the factory, spending time with various engineers who explained their roles within the business.

They also had the opportunity to be ‘hands on’ and made a chess piece which they could take away with them as a souvenir of their visit. Hopefully they weren’t put off for life and some will see engineering as a serious career opportunity.
